Learning the lessons from the previous game, NATO further increased the numbers of infantry and did not defend the easternmost buildings, meaning the Soviets had no line of sight to the defenders.
Learning the lessons from the previous game, NATO further increased the numbers of infantry and did not defend the easternmost buildings, meaning the Soviets had no line of sight to the defenders.
The game started well for NATO when the solitary Leopard 1A5 caught two BMP2s in the open and killed both with their passengers. The Soviet right flank moved south quickly to get into cover. They then rushed the village with the remaining BMPs providing support fire. A deadly cat and mouse game between the BMPs and the German infantry resulted in the Soviets slowly gaining the upper hand but at the cost of a number of BMPs and infantry sections. Greatly felt by the Germans was the loss of the Leopard to a flanking shot from an RPG7.
Tim's ASU85s were again heavily present with 10 being deployed in support of the infantry. This game however they were less effective with the lone advancing ASU falling to the Milan team hiding in the only tree line on the table. The Milan team also used their weapon in bunker busting mode to destroy a Soviet infantry section who found that German buildings are not proof against Milans!
As the Soviets pushed through the centre and northern parts of the town NATO's reinforcements started to arrive including another Leopard which quickly fell prey to the T72A in a fast paced gunnery duel through the main road of the town.
With NATO losses mounting (although this time the Soviets were feeling the hurt too), desperate hand to hand fighting in the town left the NATO defenders reeling from the overwhelming numbers of Soviets. At this point time ran out (it was a school night after all) and we called the game over. NATO had definitely lost more break points but valuable lessons had been learned that will be put into practice in the official game on the last board before the Soviets reach the final table and their objective the River Wesser.
